Sometimes, symbols can be pesky when working in Photoshop files or HTML.  However, for both, there are easy codes you can use and remember to insert the proper symbols—including the emdash into your Photoshop and HTML files.

WINDOWS USERS

Because these are Windows keystrokes, they work whether you’re in Photoshop, an HTML editor or WordPress.

If you’re ever in need of keystrokes to call up a specific symbol, search for your character map on your computer.  Find that here:

Start Menu > then All Programs >> Accessories >> System Tools >>Character Map

This will show you all the symbols and their keystrokes.

Here are the codes below to a couple basic special characters you might use.  To get these to work, press and HOLD the ALT key while you hit all of the numbers in order.

— Emdash symbol: Alt + 0151

© Copyright symbol:  Alt + 0169

® Registered Symbol: Alt + 0174

™ Trademark Symbol: Alt + 0153

MAC USERS

Not being a MAC user, I hope these are accurate. If you try them out and they aren’t please let me know.

How Do I: Set up the Akismet plugin?

Wednesday, September 1st, 2010

You have a new WordPress website, which immediately means you need to worry about spam in your comments. The easiest and fasted way is to activate the Akismet plugin that is included with every WordPress installation. There are just a few steps to getting Akismet to work, so here you go:

  • Sign up for a new user name/account at wordpress.com for a user name/account, not a blog. (Select the radio button that says “Just a username, please.”)  You need to do this in order to acquire an API Key, necessary for running Akismet.
  • Once you’re logged into your new account, in the upper left corner, click on “My Account.”
  • From the drop-down menu, choose “Global Dashboard”
  • From the menu on the left hand side, click on “Personal Settings.”
  • Your API Key will be at the top of the page.  Copy that key.
  • Go to your website wp-admin page and log in.
  • Click on plugins.
  • Activate Akismet.
  • You’ll see a note at the top of your screen saying that you need to enter info to make Akismet work. Click on that link.
  • Paste in the API Key you got from wordpress.com into the proper field and save changes.
  • Your Akismet is working and will filter spam in your comments.

Note:  The filter isn’t perfect.  You will see some comments make it through that resemble normal text.  Always check the email address before approving one of these comments. If it’s something that doesn’t look personal, it’s likely spam and you should delete it.

How do I: Add a Facebook page to my wordpress site?

Friday, May 21st, 2010

To add a Facebook badge to your WordPress-powered site, you’ll need to make a badge on Facebook itself.

On Facebook:

  1. Go here: http://www.facebook.com/facebook-widgets/ and choose the type you want. (Profile badge is used often).
  2. When it asks what type of code you need, choose “other” — it will give you an area of code to copy/paste.

Go To Your Site:

  • Log in to the backend of your site.
  • Once you’re at the dashboard, click on widgets on the right hand side — that’s where the sidebar features are.
  • Choose a “text” widget, drag it to the right side of the screen.
  • When it opens, paste the code into the text box.
  • Then hit save and it will appear on your sidebar.

How Do I: Get my site on google?

Friday, April 23rd, 2010

If you’ve recently launched a site or redone your website and you aren’t finding it on Google yet, there are a few things to check into.   Google ‘crawls’ the web frequently looking for new sites and new pages to index, so most often you don’t need to submit your site to the search engines for normal placement.  However, there are some things you could be doing that hinder the search engines from finding it.
